Workload Management

Most MACC students, especially those who are new to the program, will require support at home and at school in order to have success in the following areas:

·         developing a system for keeping track of homework and due dates

·         scheduling homework time

·         planning a timeline for completion of big projects

·         setting a reasonable bedtime

·         setting a “screen-off” time.  (ideally 2 hours before sleeptime)

·         finding a balance between school work, programmed activities, and downtime

When is it good enough?

Many students struggle with perfectionism. This can lead to underachievement, students not handing in assignments because their work is not meeting their standards.  It can also lead to overwork and anxiety, students staying up too late doing work and worrying extensively about their performance.  Here are some tips:

  1. Educate yourself on perfectionism.  The following article is a good place to start: Helping Gifted Students Cope with Perfectionism

  2. Discuss perfectionism with your child at a time when they are calm and not in crisis.

  3. Support them in keeping their previously set bedtime.

  4. Use rational language in times of crisis, don't rise with their emotions.

  5. Help them keep perspective by reminding them, for example that: grades do not define them, it is only elementary school, this is not their opus, mistakes are part of learning, their teacher is an understanding person.
