Specific ways to support Autonomous Learning for the MACC parent

  • Attend goal-setting and IEP meetings

  • Know your child's term and year goals

  • Ask your child about their strategies to achieve these goals, ask how you can support them in being successful

  • Let the child take control of their achieving their goals, take a supportive role

  • Encourage children to solve own problems

  • Patience, give children time to solve problems, don’t do it for them

  • Provide strategies and helpful hints, not solutions, when children are stuck

  • Minimize controlling language, instead provide rationale and explanation when discussing difficult topics such as homework completion

  • Reduce pressure and control, instead support them in reaching objectives

  • Recognize feelings and perspective of child

  • Recognize failures as learning opportunities

  • Give choices, let them pursue their own academic interest.
